What is a Pelvic Exam?

Using an instrument called a vaginal speculum your health care provider looks in the vagina to see the inner surfaces of the vagina and your cervix. Your provider will also do a manual check to assess your other reproductive organs such as the ovaries and uterus for abnormalities. If needed an STD specimen can be collected during this examination.

What is a Pap smear?

A Pap smear is simply a “test” done during a pelvic exam to look for abnormal cervical cells. Using an instrument called a vaginal speculum to open the vagina, your health care provider collects some cells from the cervix to send to the laboratory for testing.
