Reproductive Health Clinical Exams for Women

Clinical Exams (Women’s Health Checks)

May include the following elements:

  • Height & weight
  • Blood pressure
  • Iron level check
  • Basic physical examination
  • Breast exam
  • Pelvic exam
  • Pap test
  • STD testing

What is a Pelvic Exam?

Using an instrument called a vaginal speculum your health care provider looks in the vagina to see the inner surfaces of the vagina and your cervix. Your provider will also do a manual check to assess your other reproductive organs such as the ovaries and uterus for abnormalities. If needed an STD specimen can be collected during this examination.

What is a Pap smear?

A Pap smear is simply a “test” done during a pelvic exam to look for abnormal cervical cells. Using an instrument called a vaginal speculum to open the vagina, your health care provider collects some cells from the cervix to send to the laboratory for testing.

How often should I have a clinical exam?

Procedure Frequency
Pap Test
  • Every 1-3 years, beginning at age 21 (or)
  • 3 years after first sexual experience
Breast Self-Exam
  • Every month at all ages
Clinical Breast Exam
  • Age 20—39 with Pap smear
  • Age 40 + every year
Screening Mammogram
  • Age 35—39 mutual decision between women and her provider
  • Age 40 + every year
