Colorectal Cancer Screening Campaign

Colorectal cancer is the second most deadly form of cancer. Screening, however, can prevent the cancer or catch it early when it's highly treatable. But only 3 of 5 Oregonians age 50 and above are getting screened regularly for this preventable cancer.

The Cancer You Can Prevent Campaign - Call To Action!

Among Oregonians who are diagnosed with colorectal cancer each year, 3 of 5 are at a late stage. This is compared to breast cancer where only 1 of 4 are diagnosed at a late stage.

What to know:

  • Screening can prevent the cancer or catch it early when it's highly treatable.
  • Everyone over the age of 50 should be screened for colorectal cancer (45 for African Americans and 40 for those with a family history).
  • There are several different screening options. Some cost as little as $25 and all are covered by insurance.
  • One in every three people are not up-to-date on screening for colorectal cancer. Only 59 percent of Oregonians are getting screened compared to 80.5 for breast cancer screening and 81.7 for cervical cancer screening.
  • Colorectal cancer is often symptomless.
  • Colorectal cancer affects men and women equally.
  • Research found that people are most likely to get screened if they're encouraged by someone they know and trust. So, if you've been screened, sharing your story is critical to saving lives. Talk about your experience with people you know and encourage them to get screened too

The statewide colorectal screening campaign includes a website featuring spokespeople from all over Oregon which provides helpful information and resources to:

  • Encourage already screened Oregonians to tell their story and encourage others to be screened;
  • Provide information about screening options to individuals who want to be screened. Most insurance plans cover 100% of the cost of screening with no co-pays or deductibles.
  • Provide options for insurance coverage and the different health plans available in Oregon; and
  • Sign up for updates on colorectal cancer screening for men and women in Oregon.
