Supervision by the Probation Officer for youth adjudicated for criminal petitions will include the Probation Officer going to the youth’s residence and school. It may include the Probation Officer going to the youth’s place of employment or other places the youth spends significant amounts of time. If the youth is in violation of probation, they may be taken into custody by the Probation Officer and transported to the Linn Benton Juvenile Detention Center pending a hearing. The Probation Officer has the authority to place a youth on house arrest in lieu of placement in the Linn Benton Juvenile Facility if he/she decides this is an appropriate intervention.
The Probation Unit also has two Intensive Case Management (ICM) Probation Officers who provide additional supervision to high risk youth. This supervision is provided to at risk youth in addition to the services provided by the assigned Probation Officer. (See ICM program information.)
The Probation Unit collaborates with a number of community partners and agencies to coordinate services for youth and their families in the community to help reduce the youth’s progression into the Juvenile Justice System. Partner agencies include Linn County Mental Health and Linn County Alcohol and Drug who can provide assessments for youth in an effort to help identify the needs of the youth and his/her family. Assessment recommendations help provide guidance to Probation Officer’s for the level of care needed by the youth.
Oregon Youth Authority (OYA) and Department of Human Services (DHS) may become involved when a youth has exhausted all community based resources and/or presents a serious risk to the community, himself/herself or family and must be removed from their home. The assigned Probation Officers presents the case history to the Community Partner Resource Committee (CPRC) to identify appropriate services in the community to prevent the youth’s removal from their home or identifies out of home placements in effort to secure such placement and to develop a recommendation for the court. Probation Officers make referrals around the state to appropriate residential treatment programs providing case information and any assessments that have identified the treatment needs of the youth.
The Probation Unit Probation Officers are representatives in a variety of committees and programs. These include Drug Court, Intensive Case Management (ICM), Targeted Community Action Planning (TCAP) pilots started at Lebanon High School and Sweet Home High School, DTOUR, Student Threat Assessment Team (STAT), Passport to Manhood, Parent Teen Group, Gang Task Force, New Solutions, Linn-Benton Juvenile Fire Setters Network, Multi Disciplinary Team (MDT), Community Notification Youth Services Team (YST).
After completing the conditions of probation and having no new referrals for five years from the date of the probation expiring the youth may contact the Juvenile Department, complete an application and request their records be expunged in accordance with ORS 419A.260 and 419A.262.
